Want to expand and deepen your knowledge of trees and shrubs? In the Assortment Pro course, you’ll learn to identify a wider range of species and genera, while working with key aspects such as provenance, varietal authenticity, and propagation methods. This course builds on your existing knowledge and helps you assess assortments more critically and with greater precision.

You’ll not only learn how to identify trees and shrubs based on external characteristics, but also how to use the Rassenlijst Bomen – the scientifically supported reference list of recommended provenances and cultivars for planting in the Netherlands.
In addition, you’ll explore how trees are propagated and why choosing the right propagation method is essential for quality and suitability in green projects.

This is a practice-based course held at our nursery, allowing you to immediately apply your knowledge in the field.

Specifications

This course is intended for green professionals who already have a basic understanding of plant assortment and want to deepen their knowledge of identification, provenance, and propagation of trees and shrubs. It is especially relevant for:

  • Gardeners and arborists involved in plant selection and tree planting
  • Landscape architects and designers selecting trees for projects
  • Green space managers and policymakers making decisions for long-term green management

After completing this course, you’ll not only be able to recognise trees and shrubs, but also assess their quality and suitability for specific projects. You will learn:

  • The various methods of propagating trees and shrubs
  • The differences between generative (seed) and vegetative (cutting, grafting, budding) propagation – and why these matter
  • How to identify the provenance and varietal authenticity of trees and shrubs
  • How to use the Rassenlijst Bomen to select the appropriate cultivars and provenances
  • How to identify 40 genera and species by branches, buds, leaves, flowers, and other characteristics

By combining this knowledge, you’ll be able to make well-informed decisions in practice and select trees that perform optimally in their planting site.

This course is held at our nursery in Sint-Oedenrode, a unique setting where you can study trees and shrubs at various stages of growth. You won’t just be learning theory, you’ll be working directly with practical, real-life examples.

Theoretical sessions take place in De Groene Ruimte, our modern training facility. From there, we regularly head out into the field to observe and identify trees and shrubs up close.

Address:
Van den Berk College
Donderdonk 4, 5492 VJ Sint-Oedenrode
(Navigation address: Bestseweg 4)

This course is practice-oriented and takes place at our nursery. The exact programme will be tailored to the group, but you can expect a combination of theory and hands-on practice, working directly with plant assortments and propagation methods.

The course runs for a full day and includes a generous lunch, offering the opportunity to exchange experiences and insights with instructors and fellow participants.

Growth stories from our participants

I thought I already knew a lot about trees, but the **Expert Knowledge of Tree Varieties** course truly changed my perspective. I can now identify species by their branches and buds—super valuable for my work!

Handling Big Trees was exactly what I needed. Working with trees ranging from 20 to 70 cm trunk circumference gave me a lot of confidence. The instructors provided clear explanations and useful tips.

**Soil Professional** gave me insight into how to properly prepare the soil. I now apply better techniques when planting, and it clearly shows in the growth of the trees.
L. Meijer

During the **Climate and Biodiversity** course, I learned which tree species can withstand extreme drought best. This is extremely helpful for projects where we need to consider climate change.
M. de Vries

Growing Site and Aftercare was an eye-opener! I never realized that an incorrect planting technique could have such a big impact. I will definitely adjust my approach after this training.
